  Obstetrics

Welcome to Mount Desert Island Hospital's Obstetrics Department

Having a baby is a remarkable and special event in a woman's life. Where you and your family choose to have your baby is an important decision.

At MDI Hospital your baby is born in a world of privacy and undivided attention -- with the provider, labor and delivery style you choose.

Our birthing suites consist of four private rooms, each with a shower and made to feel like home. The OB Department has its own wing in the Hospital to ensure privacy and a restful atmosphere. The rooms are made to feel like home--maybe even more peaceful than home!

Our caring, experienced staff are here for you throughout your labor and delivery. The entire process takes place in a simple relaxed birthing room and there is an optional hot tub to use during labor. State-of-the-art technology is there to assist the process but does not intrude on the intimacy of giving birth.

Your physical and emotional comfort throughout your stay are most important to us and our small size allow us to give you one-to-one care. Friends and family are welcome to be with you during the birth or anytime after, and a family bed is available if you would like your support person to spend the night. If you want privacy, we can hold all your phone calls and visitors so you can rest or be alone. You can spend as much time as you want with your newborn.

Although the Hospital provides meals during your stay, you may bring in food you would like. We have refrigeration and frozen storage space available. We also keep light snacks for you and your guests, and we will pass on your suggestions and requests down to the kitchen.

We offer guidance and support throughout your post-partum and newborn stay to ensure you and your familyÕs comfort and confidence at discharge. Our nurses will handle the screening and teaching that is done before and during delivery itself, as well as post-partum and infant care. Whether you are an experienced mother or a novice, we offer teaching so that every mother goes home feeling confident in caring for herself and baby.

And every cherished birth is celebrated with going-home gifts and a specially prepared, candlelight meal for two.
