Psychologist Stephen Koscherak, Ph.D, ABPP has joined the staff at the Community Health Center in Southwest Harbor. As a member of the MDI Behavioral Health Center staff, Dr. Koscherak will offer counseling for school-age children, adolescents, adults, and married couples Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Dr. Koscherak earned his undergraduate degree from Tufts University in 1967. His received his Master of Arts in 1970 and his doctorate in 1972 from State University of New York at Buffalo.

Between 1971 and 1981, Dr. Koscherak served as the head of the Psychology Department at Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center in West Seneca, New York.
 
From 1979 to 1987, and again from 2000 until joining MDI Hospital’s staff, he provided outpatient child, adult and family therapy at the Lifetime Health Medical Center in West Seneca. 
 
Dr. Koscherak had also been an independent practitioner in a group practice in Orchard Park, New York from 1988 until this year, treating school-age children, adolescents, and adults. 
 
Dr. Koscherak’s background includes serving as a mental health consultant for a New York health maintenance organization (HMO) and as a marriage and divorce counselor. 
 
Dr. Koscherak is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology, holds a certificate in Divorce Mediation and has held a Maine state license in psychology since 1985. 
 
“Working at the Community Health Center is very attractive to me because I can coordinate care with the other providers there,” said Dr. Koscherak. “I like a multi-disciplinary approach because I believe in looking at all aspects of people’s needs.” 
 
Dr. Koscherak practices using a Family Systems approach to therapy. “It’s the idea that events within the family are interconnected. I don’t look at things in isolation. People might have individual problems, but I look them in terms the whole system.
 
“My approach is problem-focused,” explained Dr. Koscherak. “We deal with the issues people want to deal with and do only as much as necessary. It’s short-term therapy with a long-term commitment.”
