The Diabetes Education program at MDI Hospital and the Community Health Center provides education and one-on-one support to help people manage and live well with diabetes.

Affiliated with Maine’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, our program has achieved Education Recognition from the American Diabetes Association indicating that it meets the national standards for diabetes self-management education.

We support you as you learn more about your diet and lifestyle and begin to make informed choices about your own health. With the help of our team of educators including a Certified Diabetes Education specialist, and your physician, you will learn how to prevent the complications of diabetes.

Our program includes six hours of classes following an individual one-hour assessment with a dietitian and a nurse educator. Throughout the following year, we will schedule meetings to help you meet your goals. We realize that you have a busy life; therefore, our educators are available by appointment; at times that are convenient for you.

You’ll learn what diabetes is, how it is treated and what you can do to stay healthy. We’ll provide information on how to purchase and use a glucometer, when and how to test your blood sugar at home, and how to eat healthy and safely including. We will also help you understand your medications and how to use them

You’ll gain a better understanding of low blood sugar, what causes it, how to treat it, and how to prevent it. You’ll also learn what causes stress, how it can affect you, and how to manage it.

Other topics include: the benefits of exercise; foot, dental, and eye care; what to do on sick days; and traveling with diabetes

A referral by a physician is necessary in order to take part in the MDI Hospital Diabetes Education Program, or call us and we will make the referral for you. Most health insurance plans will cover the cost of the program. We can help you determine whether or not your insurance coverage will apply.
