Blank also attributes the many partnerships the hospital has forged as contributing to the organization’s overall success. For example, MDI Hospital’s Critical Access Hospital designation is aligned with Eastern Maine Medical Center. That relationship will be expanding in 2013 when MDI Hospital join’s the pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) established by Eastern Maine Health System to offer enhanced care management for patients with chronic illness.
MDI Hospital’s partnerships also include the groundbreaking educational partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. The Penn Medicine Collaboration provides enhanced educational opportunities for caregivers by providing a direct link to one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. “In many cases our patients have access now to lifesaving techniques that will be the standard of care in the future,” Blank said.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent organization founded by large employers to initiate health care improvements. Top Hospital selections are based on national quality data and the results of Leapfrog’s annual survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.

Mount Desert Island Hospital was named one of the top 20 critical access hospitals for patient performance in the country by the National Rural Health Association.
The top 20 critical access hospitals, including MDI Hospital, scored best among critical access hospitals on iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength Index for Patient Perspective. The Patient Perspective index is a patient rating of hospital performance based on rankings on two Hospital Compare categories; Overall Rating and Highly Recommend. Hospital Compare was created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to measure the quality of care at Medicare-certified hospitals.

For an unprecedented 10th year in a row, MDI Hospital was awarded the Best Overall Performer Award by Avatar International and is the only facility in the nation to earn the recognition for 10 consecutive years. In addition to the Overall Best Performer, MDI Hospital also received the 2011 Exceeding Patient Expectations Award.

MDI Hospital is one of only 28 hospitals nationwide to earn the 2012 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence. The award honors organizations that have differentiated themselves around national performance standards by achieving exceptionally high levels of performance.
VHA gives its Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence annually to recognize organizations that achieve top performance on clinical core measures established and tracked by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, including the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Services (HCAHPS) survey, which measures hospital patient satisfaction nationwide.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care named only 12 Maine hospitals to its 2012 Honor Roll. The health insurer publishes the Honor Roll to enable customers to evaluate and select hospitals based on performance. The Honor Roll recognizes hospitals whose performance was among the top 25 percent of those measured nationally by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Leapfrog Group. A total of 34 hospitals from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire earned the recognition.

Patients at Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Island Infusion Center will be more comfortable and have greater access to care thanks to the generosity of the Bar Harbor (MDI) Rotary Club.
The club this week presented the Island Infusion Center staff with a check for $6,100 representing the proceeds from the club’s annual Adventure Golf Tournament at Pirate’s Cove mini golf. The funds will be used to purchase a new infusion chair to make lengthy treatments more comfortable, two tablet computers for patients to use, and 200 $20 gas cards that can be offered to patients for whom the cost of travel to and from treatment would be a hardship.

Mount Desert Island Hospital and Health Center’s newest physician, Tanya Hanke, DO, believes there are many influences on one’s health that often require different kinds of care. As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, she is a board certified family physician and practices traditional family medicine as well as osteopathic manipulation. She is also versed in the wellness potential of many Eastern or alternative practices and uses all the tools in her toolbox to practice Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Hanke completed her family practice residency at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT; one of only 12 programs in the nation to offer a fourth year for individual specialization. Her integrative medicine track took her to China to study acupuncture and also included holding clinics to explore the paths patients wish to take towards wellness. “I would talk with them about their health and concerns, then I would collaborate with a group of massage therapists, homeopaths, acupuncturists, physicians and we would discuss the potential options that patient would have,” she said.
She has also recently completed a fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Andrew Weil, MD, who is credited with creating the field of Integrative Medicine, founded the center. The concept of integrative medicine is to compliment Western medicine by incorporating alternative therapies such acupuncture, herbal remedies, meditation and other “spiritual” strategies.
“To me integrative medicine is kind of combining Eastern and Western medicine and allowing for the best treatment of the patients’ mind, body and spirit,” Dr. Hanke said.
For Dr. Hanke, Integrative Medicine is about being able to offer options to her patients they may not have considered before that may impact their overall health. “My goal is to get my patients healthy on every level so that their stress levels are low, they’re sleeping and eating well, and we can focus on prevention,” she said.
Originally from Upstate New York, Dr. Hanke first came to Maine to attend medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and was anxious to return after completing her residency. “I loved living in Maine,” she said. “It’s nice to be where it’s a little quieter, a little bit slower (than a larger city). I like the small town. I want to know the community.”
Her interests in outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, hiking, and photography also helped attract her to the area to establish her practice and become a part of the community. After nearly a decade of school and residency programs that took here all over the world, she is ready to settle down. “I must have 42 can openers because every time I moved I bought a new one because I couldn’t find the old one,” she jokes.

The nation’s first advanced and accredited Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) are set to graduate from a pioneering year-long program. Six hospitals in eastern Maine, led by Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, and Eastern Maine Community College, created the Experienced CNA program to improve patient care within the CNA scope of practice. It is considered to be the first program of its kind in the country to provide advanced, accredited training to CNAs.
A total of 14 students representing each participating hospital will accept their advanced certification at a graduation ceremony on Nov. 27 at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor.
“Graduates of this program are better able to perform the duties of their job with increased levels of patient care and patient safety,” said MDI Hospital’s Director of Education Jeff Boal, who drafted the program’s curriculum. “This adds formal education to allow these Experienced CNA’s to practice at the top end of their license.”
Ensuring they have the skills and knowledge they need to fulfill their nursing duties is at the core of the program but as the program progressed, Boal said, other, more broad-based objectives became clear. “Now that they’re completing this program, they have a much stronger sense of pride, duty and self worth,” Boal said. “It’s a formal way we’re saying ‘We recognize you for the contributions you make to your organization and to the patients you care for.”
Certified Nursing Assistants are on the frontline of health care. Their primary role in many facilities is to provide assistance with daily living and medical care such as taking vital signs. In many cases, they provide the physical labor of patient care.
The Experienced CNA program is a collaborative effort between the Health Care Sector Grant Fund, Region 2 of the State of Maine, and the education department at MDI Hospital. Partner hospitals in the region include Maine Coast Memorial in Ellsworth, Blue Hill Memorial, Down East Community in Machias, Mayo Regional in Dover-Foxcroft, and Charles Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
One requirement of the federal grant that funded the creation of the program was that it had to have demonstrable benefits to those who participate. In addition to pay raises, Boal said many students feel they have validated their profession to themselves. “It’s a milestone,” he said. “They’re about to graduate from something that never existed before, which is inspiring.”
Now that program is in place, the emphasis will be to ensure it becomes a part of the community college system so that it is available for other CNA’s to enhance their skills and knowledge base. Boal is currently working with educators at EMCC to establish a place in the course catalog for Experienced CNA training for future classes to expand their skills and establish their place firmly within the health care system today and into the future.
