Community Dental Center Upgrades Dental Services with New Scanner Through a Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Grant

Southwest Harbor, Maine – Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital’s Community Dental Center (CDC) is excited to announce a significant upgrade to dental services by acquiring a Fastscan.io Intraoral Scanner thanks to a Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Grant. The intraoral scanner is a lightweight, slender, wand-shaped device which captures direct optical impressions of a patient’s oral cavity by painlessly projecting a light source onto the area to be scanned. This state-of-the-art equipment will cut down on time spent in the office for patients, as a scan can be done in a fraction of the time it takes to mold a traditional physical impression.

The Community Dental Center has never had an intraoral scanner before, as modeling for dental work had previously been accomplished with conventional plastic impression trays. This plastic impression requires disposable arch trays, alginate compound, and dental stone that must also be kept on hand and utilized for each dental impression taken. These supplies represent an impactful, recurring expense, and are environmentally wasteful; waste that will be dramatically decreased through the use of this scanner.

The Community Dental Center is a patient-centered dental facility that fully integrates with MDI Hospital’s community-responsive approach to medicine. As a full-service oral health practice with a staff of seven, the CDC’s services include preventive cleanings, extractions, restorations and fillings, root canals, and emergency treatment. The Center also offers pediatric dentistry, sealants, fluoride treatments, tooth whitening, and removable prosthetics. The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has been a steadfast funding partner since the CDC’s opening in 2014.

Jane Ogembo, DDS, MPH has served as the Community Dental Center’s dentist since 2019. Having grown up in a small village in rural western Kenya, she understands how challenging it can be for residents in isolated areas to receive essential care. Dr. Ogembo’s professional journey has taken her from New York University College of Dentistry (DDS) and Boston University School of Public Health (MPH), then to dental practices in Iowa, New York, Massachusetts, and eastern Maine. As a member of the American Dental Association and the American Public Dental Health Association, she enjoys participating in their work to advance the profession and improve dental services on MDI.

MDI Hospital and the Community Dental Center deeply appreciate the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation’s grant funding for the Fastscan.io Intraoral Scanner, which will streamline a variety of dental services, saving time and money, while significantly improving the quality and patient comfort of oral impressions and the treatments that result from them.
