Whenever Buddy comes to visit, faces light up as his yellow fluffy tail wags its way down MDI Hospital’s hallways. The four year old golden retriever is one of MDI Hospital’s most valued volunteers. He gently greets patients and staff alike, giving them the comfort that only a dog knows how to. “Buddy and I really enjoy visiting patients and staff,” says owner Jenny Gott, RN, BSN, Reiki Master Teacher. “Buddy helps to take them to a place of calm and peace. They frequently talk about the animals they have at home or had when they were growing up.” For Jenny and Buddy, healing is a way of life. Buddy has been a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs Inc. for two years, but he started his journey providing therapy for others when he was only a few months old visiting critical care patients in Bangor.
As a nurse, Jenny witnessed firsthand how much joy and comfort therapy dogs brought to her patients. “When I was a home health/hospice nurse, visiting patients in the local nursing homes, I was exposed to several therapy dog teams,” she says. “I saw how visits from the dogs brought the patients much joy and brightened their days and brought them happy memories.”
