Dr. Weiss Offers Expanded Sleep, Pulmonology Services

Robert Weiss, MD is now offering expanded pulmonology and sleep services at Cadillac Family Practice. As a pulmonologist and sleep specialist, Dr. Weiss is specially trained to diagnose and treat lung and sleep disorders.

Since the fields of pulmonology and sleep were established, there has been significant advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of each, says Dr. Weiss. “There are more programs available to people with lung disease today, we are able to pick up disease earlier on, enhancing the quality of life for our patients.”

Expanded testing options and screenings in primary care, particularly for young people, allow for the early diagnosis and successful treatment of a variety of conditions such as COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and lung disease. Your lungs work hard, taking in as many as 20,000 breaths a day and providing your body with the oxygen that it needs to function. If you are having a problem catching your breath, wheezing, a persistent cough, or any problem that interferes with normal breathing, it is important that you consult with a pulmonologist, he says.

In the field of sleep medicine, new technology has spurred a move toward home testing, a far more comfortable environment that a laboratory for sleep studies, says Dr. Weiss. “Island residents no longer need to travel to Bangor or Ellsworth for treatment of sleep disorders—we have comprehensive treatment options right here on MDI.”

Sleep disorders not only can leave you feeling sleepy and tired during waking hours, but can put you at higher risk for high blood pressure, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, irregular heartbeat, coronary heart disease and stroke, says Dr. Weiss. In order to help avoid these issues, he offers specialized care in the treatment of as sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, night terrors and behavioral sleep disorders.

Dr. Weiss is a board certified internist specializing in pulmonology and sleep disorders. He studied pulmonology and critical care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the top pulmonology programs in the country. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
