BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island Hospital ranks #1 in Maine according to the results of a national survey of patient ratings. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), announced last week that MDI Hospital is the top hospital in the state and one of the top three in New England according to patient perspective.
“We are proud to be #1. Our hospital scored equal to or above the state and national averages in all quality indicators, which is a testament to the quiet work we do behind the scenes to ensure that our patients’ have the best possible experience no matter what the circumstance,” said Art Blank, president/CEO of MDI Hospital. “The HCAHPS ranked 42 Maine hospitals based on patient experience. To come out on top in a state that ranks well above national average for the quality of its hospitals is a real honor, and a reflection of the community that we live in and the compassionate people that make up our team. We have great patients and we like listening to what they have to say.”
HCAHPS is a national, standardized survey of hospital patients created to publicly report the patient’s perspective of hospital care. The survey asks a random sample of recently discharged patients about important aspects of their hospital experience. The HCAHPS results allow consumers to make fair and objective comparisons between hospitals and to evaluate individual hospitals according to national benchmarks. Quality indicators topics include physician communication; responsiveness of hospital staff; communication about medicines and pain management; cleanliness and quietness of hospital environment; overall rating of hospital; and willingness to recommend hospital.
This information, in turn, is provided to help support improvements in the quality of care delivered by hospitals. The intent is to help improve hospitals’ quality of care by distributing objective, easy to understand data on hospital performance, and quality information from consumer perspectives.
With half of Maine hospitals garnering half of the top fifty spots in the New England ratings, Becky Schnur, Director of Communication with the Maine Hospital Association reports, “Maine hospitals strive to provide the best possible patient experience in their facilities and continually work on improving their survey results.”
