Did you know November is National Diabetes Month? Every 21 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Being diagnosed can be scary, and managing diabetes every day can be difficult. Here at MDI Hospital, we have a diabetes team that is dedicated to helping those living with diabetes and providing support in managing those everyday challenges. Our team consists of three highly trained diabetes education nurses and two dietitians that are available to work with clients at three different locations, the MDI Hospital, Trenton Health Center and Community Health Center.

With the holidays fast approaching, it can be hard to stay healthy with all yummy temptations that are often very high in carbohydrates. Here are a few tips to try to stay healthy and on track during the holidays:

  • Get active! Ask a friends or family to go for a walk at lunchtime or after work, take a hike with your furry friend, join a local gym or health fitness program or try exercise videos online or on DVD (you can borrow a free activity DVD from our diabetes team or at your local library)
  • Plan ahead! When faced with holiday parties or gatherings, survey the food offered and make a plan to balance your plate with protein and veggies or reach out to our dietitians to develop strategies specific to you
  • Go digital! Track your food and blood sugar control using a phone app (ask our diabetes team for a list of phone apps great for diabetes and health)

Get support! Ask your provider for a referral to our MDI Diabetes Education Program to get one-on-one support and group classes on living with diabetes or attend the local diabetes support group (Hancock County Diabetes Support Group is offered on the first Tuesday of Every month)
