MDI Hospital Nurses Achieve National Credentials

Mount Desert Island Hospital Emergency Department nurses Linda Crowell RN, and Eileen Wignall, RN have attained a nationally recognized credential in emergency nursing. The two nurses received their Certified Emergency Nurse certificate by passing an exam administered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.

“The CEN credential represents a commitment of Linda and Eileen to quality, state-of-the-art emergency care,” said MDI Hospital ER Director Chris Costello, RN. “Emergency nursing incorporates a wide spectrum of patient care that requires highly specialized skill and extensive knowledge as well as the unique ability to care for all ages of patients that have a wide range of illnesses or injuries.”

The CEN examination evaluates the nurse’s knowledge in the areas of clinical pathophysiology, patient care management, professional issues, environment, toxicology, shock, trauma, and medical emergency care.

“Linda and Eileen are part of a team of CEN certified nurses here who have made the commitment to undergo this training so they can provide the exceptional care to the thousands who come through our ER door,” said Costello.

“More and more patients each year find their way into our health care system through our emergency department,” said Costello. “So it is vital that we have nurses who have this advanced training to handle the broad spectrum of patients we see.”

Costello has also received the CEN certification along with nurses Jean Young, RN and Lisa Smith, RN. “Our commitment to professional development is a reflection of the Hospital’s dedication to quality outcomes for our patients,” said Costello.
