Island Kind: Barbara Baron Gifford

For Barbara Baron Gifford, volunteering isn’t something she started later in life, it’s something she has always done.

Her commitment to helping others began at just 14 years old, when she became a hospital candy striper. That early experience set the tone for a lifetime of service that has spanned schools, nonprofits, community boards, and most recently, the MDI Hospital Auxiliary.

When Barbara talks about her involvement with the Auxiliary, she places it squarely within that broader story of giving back:

“Being involved in Auxiliary has been a rewarding part of my life here on the island via fundraising, organizing events and supporting our hospital and health centers. Our work is grounded in a shared commitment to care for people who live here. The Auxiliary may not always be in the spotlight, but its impact is felt across the island in so many ways, and I’m proud to be a part of that legacy.”

Over the past decade, Barbara has volunteered in the hospital cafeteria and become a deeply engaged Auxiliary member. As Jewelry Sale Committee Chair, her events raised over $4,500 in 2025 alone, in addition to her other fundraising involvement working on the summer Quilt Raffle and winter Holiday Stars program. All funds raised by the Auxiliary support patient experience at the hospital and health centers by purchasing vital materials and equipment that might not otherwise be attainable for patients.

Barbara’s story is a reminder that health and wellbeing are team sports. Skilled providers and clinicians are supported by members of the community who share the mission of enhancing high-quality, patient-centered care, close to home. Through her time, energy, and steadfast commitment, Barbara embodies the very spirit of Island Kind.
