Any loss of function through injury or accident to the hands can have a devastating effect on people’s lives and livelihoods.
Fortunately for people in the MDI region, Brian Yaeck, an Occupational Therapist at Mount Deser
Island Hospital, has undergone specialized training to ensure the maximum recovery for patients suffering from debilitating hand or upper extremity problems.
As a Certified Hand Therapist, Yaeck has undergone extensive training and passed a comprehensive test of advanced knowledge in all areas of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. With his training, he can evaluate and manage a wide assortment of injuries and conditions.
“The Certified Hand Therapist credential offers assurance to the public that the therapist has achieved the highest level of competency in the profession and stays up to date with practice within the field,” said Yaeck
“The intricate anatomy of the arm and hand frequently requires very delicate surgery, often with microscopic techniques,” said Yaeck. “The technical complexity of these kinds of surgeries demands an advanced therapeutic approach during postoperative recovery. My training has given me an in depth understanding of these advanced surgical techniques and postoperative therapy programs.”

“Insurance companies also look to Certified Hand Therapists to ensure their clients are receiving care from the most qualified people,” explained Yaeck. “And patients are becoming more knowledgeable, and are looking for the most capable people to handle their rehabilitation.”
Certification is voluntary and involves meeting rigorous standards, developing a long-range career path, and acquiring the advanced study and training required to pass the certification examination.
To achieve certification, Occupational or Physical Therapists must have at least five years clinical experience with 4000 hours or more of specialty experience in hand therapy. They must also pass a comprehensive test of advanced knowledge is all areas of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
The Hand Therapy Certification Commission, a not-for-profit corporation, is the only organization that grants Hand Therapy Certification in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand.
