Mount Desert Island Hospital will once again host the innovative and powerful seminars “Literature and Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care,” sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council. Conducted the last Monday of each month from October 2010 through April 2011, the seminars provide an opportunity to discuss works of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction that illuminate issues central to the care of people, whether they are well, sick or dying.
Community members as well as hospital staff are encouraged to participate.
The Literature and Medicine program gives participants, under the guidance of experienced facilitator Candice Stover, a chance to reflect on the complex nature of their roles and responsibilities in relation to patients and care givers.
Cost for the program is $45 for each participant to cover the cost of books and a light dinner.
Session will be held in the Hospital’s conference room B on the second floor. The first session is scheduled for October 25th, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. The seminar will not be conducted during March and there will be possible schedule changes near the holidays. Space is limited and seating will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.
Anyone interested in the “Literature and Medicine” program should call Karen Dawson-Yaeck at 288-5082, extension 1319.
