Eric Maughan, MD, has a deep-rooted connection to Mount Desert Island Hospital that began long before he joined the medical staff in 2023. As a medical student in the 2014 Maine Track program, Eric spent a year training at MDI Hospital and quickly fell in love with the hospital, the close-knit community, and the natural beauty of Acadia National Park.
Along with his medical training, Eric has devoted his skills and energies to saving lives in time of emergency: as a wildland firefighter; as a Search and Rescue volunteer throughout the State of Maine; and as an Air Force Special Operations team member, providing medical care in combat zones around the world. These experiences fostered Eric’s appreciation for rural life and rural medicine, as well as a passion for delivering high-quality care in smaller hospital settings.
When the time came to choose where to practice medicine, MDI Hospital was at the very top of his list. “During my time at MDI Hospital,” Eric says, “I felt like I was an integral part of the care team, and that I was making a difference to patients while I was learning. I could be with patients from the clinic to the emergency department and the operating room, where I benefitted from seeing the patient’s whole case, and the patient had someone they could trust to be with them every step of the way.”
Eric enjoys being an active part of the island community as an ED Physician, and he deeply appreciates MDI Hospital’s commitment to patient-centered care. His care philosophy centers on combining medical expertise with each patient’s values and priorities to develop the best possible care plan.
