MDI Hospital earns recognition for tobacco free campus

Mount Desert Island Hospital has been awarded seven stars for the 2013 Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network Gold Star Standards of Excellence program. The program provides hospitals with a way to be recognized for the work they have done to create a tobacco-free environment and support tobacco-free lifestyles.

“Having tobacco-free campus polices are ways we can help serve as a role model in the community to help improve the health and well-being of our patients and the community as a whole,” said MDI Hospital’s Community Health Educator Kathy Mulligan.

Each year, the Breathe Easy Coalition recognizes hospitals at the bronze, silver and gold levels based on how many of the 10 Gold Star Standards they meet. This year, 31 health care organizations from across the state will be recognized along with seven gold star champions. With seven stars, MDI Hospital earned Bronze recognition.

“We, as an organization, are pleased to support the efforts of the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Maine and the Breathe Easy Coalition to reduce tobacco use,” Mulligan said. “Programs like this give us a way to measure our efforts by setting the gold standard.”
