The endorsements patients at Mount Desert Island Hospital provided have led to the organization being among the nation’s top 15 percent of hospitals for patient experience.
A newly released report by Healthgrades, an online resource for information about physicians and hospitals, looks at the 455 hospitals nationwide that are recipients of the 2013 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award. MDI Hospital is one of 10 Maine hospitals to earn the recognition. According to the Healthgrades report, award winners were “identified as providing outstanding performance in the delivery of a positive experience for patients during their hospital stay.”

Healthgrades’ Outstanding Patient Experience Award is based on HCAHPS patient survey data released from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in December 2012, covering patients discharged between April 2011 and March 2012.
For more than a decade, patients have consistently commented on their overall positive experiences at MDI Hospital. In 2012 alone, MDI Hospital collected five national awards for quality care including the Top 20 Critical Access Hospital from the National Rural Health Association, the Top Rural Hospital Award from The Leapfrog Group, and Best Overall Performer from Avatar International.
Blank attributes the many partnerships the hospital has forged as contributing to the organization’s overall success. For example, MDI Hospital’s groundbreaking educational partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine provides enhanced educational opportunities for caregivers by providing a direct link to one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. “In some cases our patients have access now to leading edge lifesaving techniques that will be the standard of care in the future,” Blank said.
