Internist Ronald Prokopius, MD Joins MDI Hospital Medical Staff

Internal Medicine/Geriatric specialist Ronald Prokopius, MD, has joined the active medical staff of Mount Desert Island Hospital. A primary care practitioner, Dr. Prokopius is holding office hours at Cooper Gilmore Health Center in Bar Harbor.
 
The focus of Dr. Prokopius’ practice will be providing outpatient Internal Medicine care to patients eighteen years of age and older.
 
After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio in 1995, Dr. Prokopius earned his Medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Akron, Ohio in 2000.
 
From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Prokopius completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Summa Health Systems in Akron, Ohio. Following this, he completed a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, one of America’s top-ranked Geriatric hospital training programs.
 
Between 2004 and 2009, Dr. Prokopius served as an attending physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at Miles Medical Group in Damariscotta, Maine. Dr. Prokopius also served as the Medical Director of Cove’s Edge Retirement Community in Damariscotta from 2006 to 2009.
 
As an internist and geriatrician, Dr. Prokopius is focused on the patient’s well being; diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illness that can occur in combination with other disease states. “I take a multi-faceted approach to care when caring for my patients,” he explained.
 
“I look at underlying factors that might contribute to a person’s condition, including medications and social issues. If possible, another goal is to help elderly patients stay healthy enough to be able to age at home and avoid institutional living,” said Dr. Prokopius.
 
“The level of services provided to the elderly population at MDI Hospital is impressive,” said Dr. Prokopius of his decision to move from Damariscotta. “I believe my practice is a good fit for the community and MDI Hospital.”
