Mobile CT Scanner in Place While MDI Hospital Installs New Unit

While renovations are underway to replace its current CT (Computed Tomography) scanner with a state-of-the-art unit, Mount Desert Island Hospital has placed a temporary CT scanner at its Wayman Lane entrance.

“As we undergo this important transition, we’ve made every accommodation to ensure that our patients continue to receive the high-quality imaging and care they’ve come to expect,” said Susan Ray, Vice President of Ancillary Services.

The mobile unit is located in the parking lot adjacent to Wayman Lane to ensure that no parking spaces were impacted.

“We’re working hard to ensure that this transition is seamless for patients,” said Director of Medical Imaging Leanne Linscott. “Just as before, patients scheduled for a CT scan are asked to report to registration at the Hospital’s main entrance next to the Emergency Department. They will then be escorted to the CT scanner, one floor up, by elevator.”

The mobile unit has an entry lift to ensure safe and convenient access for all patients. While the mobile CT scanner is outside, its entrance is completely covered by an awning. “We will also provide warmed blankets for all patients,” added Linscott. “A changing area will also be located inside the unit for privacy and convenience.”

While the mobile unit is similar in capabilities to the CT scanner being replaced, the new unit, a Toshiba Aquilion 64-slice CT scanner, will provide a significant upgrade. “This CT scanner opens new clinical possibilities,” explained John Benson, MD, FACR, Medical Director of Medical Imaging at MDI Hospital. “It represents our on-going commitment to being a leader in the field of medical imaging technology.”

Since its introduction in the 1970s, CT has become an important tool in medical imaging to supplement X-rays and medical ultrasonography. It has more recently begun to also be used for preventive medicine or screening for disease, for example CT colonography for patients with a high risk of colon cancer.

The new unit is scheduled to be installed and operational by the middle of March.
