Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Women’s Health Center is pleased to welcome back Al Vernacchio, M.S.Ed., sexuality educator and consultant. This year, Mr. Vernacchio will be presenting a new lecture, “The Sexually Healthy Adolescent: It’s Not A Contradiction In Terms” on Wednesday, March 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at MDI High School.

Al Vernacchio is a high school teacher at Friends Central School in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and has more than 20 years experience teaching human sexuality at the high school and college level and for civic organizations. Last March, Mr. Vernacchio educated adults on MDI with his presentation, “The Talk: How to Talk to Kids at Any Age about Healthy Sexuality.”  He has also published book chapters and lesson plans on sexuality-related issues. Mr. Vernacchio earned his bachelor’s degree in theology from St. Joseph’s University in 1986 and his master’s degree in Human Sexuality Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS), The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and Advanced Sexuality Educators and Trainers (ASET).

Topics to be presented this year include: Characteristics of normal/healthy adolescent sexuality; developmentally appropriate ways to talk with young people about sexuality; skills for young people to help resist unwanted/unplanned sexual situations; orienting young people toward healthy sexuality versus anxious sexuality.  The event is free with the target audience of parents, guardians, and populations working with adolescents.

Mr. Vernacchio will also be the featured speaker at MDI High School’s Worlds Aids Awareness Day on March 30, and on March 31 he will work with students enrolled in the wellness class at MDI High School.
