A large crowd of well wishers was on hand for the October 20th ribbon cutting ceremony in Mount Desert Island Hospital’s new Oncology and Hematology Department. The event, co-sponsored by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, gave the public its first glimpse of the spacious new second-floor facility.

In his remarks, Hospital President and CEO Art Blank thanked Bar Harbor Bank & Trust for its generosity toward the Hospital’s capital campaign which funded the new Oncology Department as well as a new inpatient care center. Additionally, Blank offered special thanks to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust employees who participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
Blank also thanked Campaign Chair Dean Read “whose direction and leadership as Campaign Chair of the Special Gifts Campaign helped us to raise over $3.5 million.” He also acknowledged and thanked the MDI Rotary Club “for their generous support of this department and for their commitment to cancer-related causes in our community.”
“In 1989, because of a growing need in our community, we began to offer chemotherapy and hematology services in partnership with Eastern Maine Medical Center,” said Blank. “Over the years the need for these services has grown. Currently, under the direction of Dr. Sigrid Berg, we have a collaborative relationship with Cancer Care of Maine that allows us to provide sophisticated, high-quality care close to home.”
With nearly 1000 additional square feet over the previous space, the new facility provides more privacy and comfortable accommodations for patients. Large windows that provide soothing natural light ensure a relaxing, healing environment for patients and their families.
Patients will be seen in the Hospital’s current Oncology and Hematology Department until the new Department officially opens in early November.
