Victoria Conner’s journey to owning My Darling Maine wasn’t planned—it was serendipitous. In 2014, a friend who ran a small retail space in Bar Harbor needed help managing the shop. Victoria, fresh from a corporate career in New York City, jumped in to assist and quickly realized she had a knack for curating a shop and connecting with customers. Within a few years, she took over the space, putting her own stamp on the store and officially opening My Darling Maine in 2017. This year, the shop celebrates its tenth season.
“I didn’t come up here thinking I’d start my own store,” Victoria says. “But I knew I had a point of view and wanted a steady home for my newly adopted dogs. That’s really how it all began.” Boris and Natasha became a fixture at the shop and around town—you’ll even spot them in the logo—reflecting the warmth and personal touch Victoria brings to every corner of My Darling Maine.
Victoria’s vision has always been about connection—both to her customers and to the local community. She prioritizes Maine-made products and works closely with local artisans, selecting items that reflect her own style and create a space that feels approachable, authentic, and uniquely Bar Harbor. “One of the best compliments I get is when people say, ‘You have a really good eye for things.’ It means the right customers are walking in and connecting with what we offer,” she explains.
Beyond creating a carefully crafted retail experience, Victoria is deeply committed to giving back. Supporting local people and organizations—including MDI Hospital—is central to her approach, reflecting her belief that small businesses can play a big role in strengthening the communities they call home. “If I can make someone smile—even with something small like a quirky mug or a funny card—then I’ve done my job.”
