Mount Desert Island Hospital has announced the hiring of Ray Chalifour of Portsmouth, New Hampshire as the new Vice President of Physician Practices.

There’s a room on Mount Desert Island Hospital’s third floor where patients can look out the window and, regardless of the weather outside or the circumstances inside, be comforted by the serene image of stars on a moonlit sky.

After nearly thirty years as a service of Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Auxiliary, the Lifeline program is now being run by Birch Bay Retirement Village.

In late October of 2009, Dr. Edward White traveled to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, laden with hundreds of pounds of donated surgical supplies as part of an annual medical mission. Having done this since 2002, he was prepared for the challenge of a makeshift surgical suite because of a fire last year that burned St. Jude hospital in the town of Vieux Fort, his base of operations. 

What he and many of the Island’s residents weren’t prepared for was Hurricane Tomas.

Mount Desert Island Hospital has improved its capacity to respond to disasters with the addition of Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Gayle McKeige. In her role, Ms. McKeige is responsible for the development and implementation of the Hospital’s Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Fortunately for patients of Mount Desert Island Hospital, urologist Dr. Surapaneni Ramanahda Rao now offers a non-invasive, efficient outpatient procedure for the relief of this painful condition.

Health care providers are often the first responders for survivors of sexual assault. To ensure a rapid, effective, compassionate response, four members of MDI Hospital’s clinical staff have undergone specialized training to help victims cope with and overcome the physical and emotional toll of this crime.
