MDI Health Introduces Next-Generation Patient-Monitoring Technology

LEAF System will support caregivers in preventing pressure injuries and monitoring patient mobility

BAR HARBOR—To help prevent pressure injuries and monitor patient mobility, MDI Health is introducing Smith+Nephew’s next-generation LEAF Patient Monitoring System, which gives caregivers real-time information about a patient’s position and movement.
A small wearable sensor continuously monitors each patient’s position, showing caregivers when repositioning is needed and whether a turn provides sufficient pressure relief. It also recognizes when patients reposition themselves.
“Technology like the LEAF System strengthens the exceptional care our clinical team provides every day,” said Chrissi Maguire, President and CEO of MDI Health. “It gives caregivers timely information at the bedside, helping them respond to each patient’s needs while supporting safety, comfort, and healing.”
The system supports individualized turning protocols, automates documentation, integrates with electronic medical records, and tracks patient movement, including steps and distance traveled. Patient-level and hospital-wide data also help clinical teams identify trends and strengthen care.
“Pressure injuries can cause serious complications and prolong recovery,” said Deb Block, Chief Nursing Officer at MDI Health. “This technology gives our nurses another valuable tool to help prevent them while supporting patient mobility and independence.”
Newly released in June, the updated LEAF System features a redesigned interface developed with input from multidisciplinary nursing teams. Its secure, cloud-based platform gives caregivers access to important information from hospital-approved devices while keeping their focus on direct patient care.
The LEAF System is designed to complement, not replace, routine observation, clinical judgment, and personal interaction between patients and their care teams.
MDI Health will begin using the system in August of 2026.
