The Mount Desert Island Hospital Organization has earned one of the nation’s most competitive awards for quality. MDI Hospital is one of only 13 hospitals selected from nearly 1,200 nationally to receive the Leapfrog Group’s Top Rural Hospital distinction.
This is the fourth national recognition MDI Hospital has earned this year. In October, MDI Hospital was named among the top 20 critical access hospitals in the nation by the National Rural Health Association. MDI Hospital also received its tenth consecutive Best Overall Performer Award by Avatar International and was one of only 28 hospitals nationwide to earn the 2012 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence.
“It is truly gratifying when an outside organization recognizes our team’s results and ranks them among the best in the nation,” said MDI Hospital President/CEO Arthur J. Blank.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent organization founded by large employers to initiate health care improvements. Top Hospital selections are based on the results of Leapfrog’s annual survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.

The Leapfrog Hospital Recognition Program uses each standard from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey to calculate an overall value score for each hospital. Hospitals with high efficiency scores have demonstrated both high quality and appropriate resource use.
