New Year Baby Born January 1st
Jennifer and Peter Kelmenson of Trenton are all smiles as they pose with their newborn daughter, Lilah Belle, on Monday at Mount Desert Island Hospital. Lilah was the first baby born in Hancock County in 2010, coming into the world at 1:05 pm on Friday, January 1st.

MDI Hospital Wins President’s Award for Patient Safety
MDI Hospital is part of a collaborative of small rural hospitals across Maine that recently received the President’s Award for Improved Patient Safety from the New England Rural Health Roundtable. The President’s Award is presented to a group or individual whose efforts in the area of rural health have had a significant impact. The award was presented at the Roundtable’s October 30th annual symposium in Portland for the Collaborative’s efforts in the area of patient medication safety initiatives.
Breast Health the Topic of November 11th Event
The Women’s Health Center and The Breast Center at MDI Hospital will co-present a free educational event entitled “Breast Health and Breast Cancer Demystified” on November 11th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
Psychologist Stephen Koscherak, Joins Community Health Center
Psychologist Stephen Koscherak, Ph.D, ABPP has joined the staff at the Community Health Center in Southwest Harbor. As a member of the MDI Behavioral Health Center staff, Dr. Koscherak will offer counseling for school-age children, adolescents, adults, and married couples Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
MDI Hospital Nurses Achieve National Credentials
Mount Desert Island Hospital Emergency Department nurses Linda Crowell RN, and Eileen Wignall, RN have attained a nationally recognized credential in emergency nursing. The two nurses received their Certified Emergency Nurse certificate by passing an exam administered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.
